Course Objectives

  1. Participants will describe normal development from the 3rd trimester through 18 months
  2. Participants understand development of hearing and the implications for music therapy.
  3. Participants will describe the effect of premature birth on the brain
  4. Participants will describe the characteristics of neonatal abstinence syndrome
  5. Participants will describe how to assess and develop a treatment plan for patients in the NICU
  6. Participants will demonstrate the knowledge and application of live music interventions to address respiratory, sleep, feeding, and quiet-alert opportunities
  7. Participants will describe indications & contraindications for music therapy
  8. Participants will explain the evidence for the use of music in the NICU

Instructor

Kathleen M. Murphy, PhD, MT-BC Coordinator of Music Therapy at Loyola University New Orleans

Dr. Kathleen M. Murphy, PhD, MT-BC is the Coordinator of Music Therapy at Loyola University. She is a clinician, supervisor, and researcher with over 30 years of clinical experience in healthcare and educational institutions. She has authored book chapters and journal articles and is the associate editor of Music Therapy Research, (3rd Edition). Her research interests are focused on music therapy in substance dependence treatment across the life span and post-traumatic stress disorder.


Continuing Education Credit

This continuing education course is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists to award 8 Continuing Music Therapy Education Credits. Loyola University Music Therapy Program (P-176) maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria.  


Participants must attend both full days to receive CMTE credits.
